This community, especially Islamists 2 and Maulvies, 3 serve as custodians of Islam in order to justify and maintain their dominant positions. 1 The mainstream Muslim community believes it is their ethical right to preserve Islam in its pristine form, and to denounce any new interpretation of the Quran or Hadith. The dominant Muslim community as a whole imposed its view on the minority community in denouncing Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as an imposter Prophet because he had ostensibly violated the finality of the Prophethood of Muhammad. Having been accused of violating the mainstream Muslim doctrine on the finality of the Prophethood, the community faced severe opposition from the other sects. However, the amc claimed its founder as the Messiah of the age and Prophet. Generally, orthodox Muslims, a conglomeration of all the schools of thought, believe in the ‘finality of the Prophethood’, that there shall be no Prophet after the Prophet of Islam. There were very minor disagreements earlier between orthodox Muslims and the newly founded sect, although the issue was aggravated further due to the intervention of religious scholars and politicians for their personal interests.

The schism took a new turn with the advent of a new sect – the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at (Community) ( amc), founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, in 1889. The historical discord between different sects within Islam has its roots in the presumption of superiority of one over another.
